As a polymer guy, I like to compare the development of my academic career to a chain-growth polymerization. The most distinctive feature of a chain-growth polymerization is its gradual growth mode, where one repeating unit is added at each step. Similarly, I become more and more in love with polymers, as I complete my bachelor, master, PhD, and postdoctoral studies. With more monomers added to its chain, an oligomer eventually transforms into a polymer. Likewise, as I become increasingly experienced in polymer research, I am determined to change from working under my advisers to build my own career. Last but not least, an energy barrier must be overcome before a new monomer can be added to a polymer chain. To overcome the barrier in transitioning from a postdoc to a professional scientist/engineer, I need to work hard, but I also need you to give me a chance for an interview.
